Spanish tax advisory

clarity before commitment

Tax advice for expats, professionals and investors in Spain. We tell you what the rules mean in practice — before you file, before you move, and before you commit to anything.

Tax advice and consultancy for expats in Spain

Spain’s tax system is well-structured — but it rewards people who plan early and penalises those who don’t. The decisions that matter most happen before you arrive, before you file, and before you buy. Whether you’re relocating for work, owning property as a non-resident, or managing assets across borders, the right advice at the right time makes a significant difference to what you actually pay.

At Baleario we provide tax advisory for internationally mobile individuals, professionals and investors across Spain. We don’t just file — we advise. Our role is to make sure the decisions you make are informed, correctly structured, and built to last.

Tax advisory services

Beckham Law Spain

The most powerful tax framework available to professionals relocating to Spain — but only if you apply correctly and before the deadline. Under the Beckham Law, qualifying individuals pay a flat 24% on Spanish income instead of up to 47% under standard residency. The savings are substantial, but the window to apply is short and the eligibility conditions are more specific than most people expect.

Pay 24% instead of up to 47% on Spanish-sourced income
Applies for up to six tax years
Must be applied for within six months of starting work in Spain
Covers employees, executives, remote workers and certain directors
Reduces wealth tax exposure to Spanish assets only
Eliminates the Modelo 720 foreign assets obligation while active

Spanish income tax returns (IRPF)

If you are tax resident in Spain, you are required to file an annual income tax return by 30 June each year. Getting it right means understanding which income to declare, which deductions apply, and how your Spanish and overseas income interacts. We prepare and submit on your behalf — correctly, on time, and with full transparency on what you owe and why.

Annual IRPF filing deadline: 30 June
Residents must declare worldwide income
Regional tax variations affect your final rate
Deductions for property, family and pension income may apply
We coordinate Spanish and overseas income reporting

Non-resident income tax (Modelo 210)

Own property in Spain but not a resident? You still have a Spanish tax obligation. Non-resident owners must declare imputed income on properties they use personally, and pay Spanish income tax on any rental income earned. This applies even if your property sits empty for most of the year. We prepare and file Modelo 210 on your behalf each year.

Applies to all non-residents owning Spanish property
Tax owed even on unrented, personally used property
24% tax rate for EU residents on rental income
19% rate for EU/EEA nationals, 24% for others on imputed income
Filing deadline varies by income type — we manage this for you

Foreign assets declaration (Modelo 720)

Spanish tax residents who hold assets outside Spain worth over €50,000 in any category are required to file Modelo 720 each year by 31 March. Missed or incorrect filings can result in fines starting at €1,500 — even where no tax is owed. First-year filings are the most important and the most commonly filed incorrectly. We prepare and file on your behalf.

Annual deadline: 31 March
Applies to foreign bank accounts, investments and property
€50,000 threshold per asset category
All assets in a category must be declared — not just the excess
Digital banks such as Revolut, Wise and N26 are declarable
Beckham Law holders are exempt while the regime is active

Wealth tax in Spain

Spain levies an annual wealth tax on net assets above a certain threshold. Rates and allowances vary significantly by region — the Balearics, Andalucía and Madrid all apply different rules. For high-net-worth individuals, structuring assets correctly before establishing Spanish tax residency can make a material difference. We advise on exposure, exemptions and long-term planning.

Applies to net assets above regional thresholds
Rates and exemptions vary significantly by region
Mallorca, Marbella and Ibiza each have different rules
Beckham Law holders are only taxed on Spanish assets
Solidarity tax applies to assets above €3 million
Advance planning before residency is established is critical

Spain digital nomad visa tax

The digital nomad visa is an immigration status — not a tax regime. Most people who move to Spain under this visa become Spanish tax residents within six months, at which point Spanish tax rules apply to their worldwide income. Some qualify for the Beckham Law, which changes the picture significantly. Understanding your position before you arrive is essential.

The visa does not determine your tax status — presence does
183 days in Spain makes you tax resident
Standard residents pay up to 47% on worldwide income
The Beckham Law may apply — eligibility depends on income structure
Freelancers and autónomos are usually excluded from Beckham Law
Social security obligations are separate and must be assessed

Why Baleario for tax advisory

We advise — we don't just file

Most tax problems we see in Spain don’t come from complex structures or aggressive planning. They come from decisions made too early, too late, or without the full picture. Our role is to make sure you understand your position before it becomes a problem — not after.

Internationally minded

We work with clients from the UK, US, Germany, the Netherlands and across Europe. We understand how Spanish tax interacts with overseas income, foreign pensions, overseas property and cross-border investments — and how to structure things correctly for your situation.

Timing is everything

The Beckham Law, Modelo 720, and residency decisions all have windows. Miss them and your options narrow. We work with clients before they move, before they buy, and before they file — because that is when the important decisions are made.

Based in Spain, working across Spain

Based in Palma, we advise clients across Mallorca, Ibiza, Marbella, Barcelona, Madrid and beyond — fully remotely or in person.

founder Quote

“Spanish tax and accounting isn’t difficult because the rules
are impossible to understand. It’s difficult because people are
rarely given the full picture.”

Most of the problems we see don’t come from complex structures. They
come from small misunderstandings that compound over time — residency
assumed too late, income reported inconsistently, filings treated as one-off
tasks instead of part of a wider financial picture.

Baleario was built to fix that. We look at residency, income structure, assets
and long-term plans together. We take responsibility for the work we file,
because getting it right matters.

Whether you’re just registering as autónomo or running an established SL,

our aim is the same: fewer surprises, fewer mistakes, and a tax position you

can actually trust.

FAQs

Yes. Spanish tax obligations are separate and arise from presence, property ownership and income earned in Spain — regardless of what your home-country adviser handles. The two advisers need to be aligned, and Spanish rules take precedence for Spanish-sourced income and assets.

Before. The most important decisions — Beckham Law eligibility, residency timing, asset structuring — all have windows that close once you arrive or once your first tax year begins. Advice after the fact is often too late to change the outcome.

Only if you have been tax resident in Spain for less than six months and have not yet missed the application deadline. Once the window closes, it cannot be reopened. If you’re unsure whether the deadline has passed, contact us as soon as possible.

Yes. Non-residents owning Spanish property are liable for non-resident income tax (Modelo 210) whether the property is rented out or used personally. The amount depends on the cadastral value of the property and your country of residence.

IRPF is the income tax paid by Spanish tax residents on their worldwide income. Non-resident income tax (IRNR, filed via Modelo 210) is paid by non-residents on Spanish-sourced income only — typically property income or gains from Spanish assets.

If you are a Spanish tax resident and hold assets outside Spain — bank accounts, investments or property — with a combined value exceeding €50,000 in any single category, you are required to file. The deadline is 31 March each year. If you are unsure, contact us before the deadline.
